The
Victoria Fire Department Honour Guard was created in 2008 in preparation
for the 150th anniversary of the Victoria Fire Department. The
mandate of the Honour Guard is that it's a voluntary organization
comprised of the members of the department who have the necessary
skills, and who wish to represent the Local, the Department and
the Municipality. The Honour Guard operates with the support of
IAFF Local 730, as well as the City of Victoria Fire Department
Administration. There has also been a great amount of support
provided from the Victoria Fire Department Historical Society.
The
Honour Guard is currently comprised of fourteen members representing
the suppression and prevention divisions of the department, and
for those that sign up, a minimum two year commitment is required.
The practices are held anywhere from bi-weekly to monthly, depending
on the amount of extra preparation that is required for an event.
There
are specific events that the Honour Guard is mandated to attend:
" All funerals of city of Victoria fire and rescue services
members.
" All funerals of retired members when requested
" All line of duty deaths of emergency services personnel
when funding is available.
" Department medal ceremonies
" May Day Parade
" One (1) special event or ceremony
In
the event that the Honour Guard is requested to attend additional
events, it is brought forward to the members for discussion, and
if the members are available, extra events are considered.
There
have also been occasions such as the BC Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial
March, the Day of Mourning, and the Terry Fox Head Shave where
the Victoria Fire Department Honour Guard joined with members
from our neighbouring municipality's fire departments in order
to collaborate and come together as a Regional Honour Guard.
If
you have any further questions, or would like to request the Honour
Guard to attend your event, please email: vfdhonourguard@gmail.com.
